Northern Italy encompasses eight of the country's 20 autonomous regions. The Lega Nord, an Italian political party led by Umberto Bossi, proposes the independence of Northern Italy under the name Padania.

Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Trentino-South Tyrol and Valle d'Aosta are regions with a special statute.
